Shockney, L., Joining the Club -- the Reality of Breast Cancer. NPI., 1995.
This book describes candidly her experiences with breast cancer as a young girl when her mother's best friend was diagnosed, as a nurse who has cared for women with this disease, and as a patient herself having had two mastectomies for treatment of her own breast cancer. The book is sold in book stores nationally. MSDBC carries the book as a fund raiser as do 10 other nonprofit organizations affiliated with breast cancer. Mrs. Shockney's royalties to date have been donated to the breast cancer organizations she works with and supports. The books also contains a special resource chapter to help women and those who love them get access to breast cancer educational material and support. Several pages of the body of the book were dedicated to describing Avon's Breast Cancer Crusade Program.

Shockney, L., "Utilization Management and Breast Cancer." The Assertive Utilization Management Report, Volume 5, No. 3, March 1995, MAGE Corporation. This article describes the changes in mastectomy care , going from a 2 to 3 day hospitalization now to ambulatory surgery or an overnight stay. The importance of meeting the patient's emotional needs during a time of high stress for the patient and her family. The role of the managed care UR nurse in being a patient advocate and the value of the Reach to Recovery program.

Shockney, L., Dierker, C., MSDBC Mother's Handbook and Daughter's Companion Brochure. Published by River Press for MSDBC organization in April 1995. Revised and republished in July 1997.
These booklets provide guidance and resource information about breast cancer treatment and emotional support. It provides helpful advice for mothers who have daughters battling this disease and describes constructive ways for them to provide support. It contains some basic medical information about post operative care following mastectomy surgery.Also included is information about how to obtain information for free medications for indigent women as well as how to gain access to clinical trial information. The booklets are distributed free of charge to women who contact MSDBC.

Shockney, L., "Looking in the Mirror: A Nurse's Experience with Breast Cancer", The Nursing Spectrum Magazine (D.C/ Baltimore Metro Edition), Volume 5, No. 12, June 12, 1995.
This article described candidly Mrs. Shockney's experience as a nurse having cared for women having mastectomy surgery to now having had two mastectomies herself and emphasizes the importance of the clinical nurses taking time to assess and meet the patient's emotional needs before , during and after her surgical treatment. She stresses that breast cancer can happen to any woman... no one is immune, including nurses and to remember that when caring for such patients. She closes her article by saying, "The next time you are caring for a patient with breast cancer, pay close attention. You might be looking in a mirror." (Article was reprinted by the Philadelphia division in June 1996)

This article provides insight into the emotional impact breast cancer has on a woman and how nurses caring for the patient can provide emotional support and advice to the patient and her family.

Mrs. Shockney wrote the forward for this book written by a breast cancer survivor about her personal experiences with this disease. The forward includes statistics about the disease and some basic medical information related to breast cancer.

This article is a guide for managed care UR nurses and case managers about worrisome questions women diagnosed with breast cancer need to know and seldom know who to ask or how to get information. (Such things as whether their insurance will cover mastectomy bra purchases, reconstructive surgery if done at a later time in life and such.) By providing this information to the patient proactively at the time the insurance company is informed of her diagnosis the patient's anxiety can be reduces and the insurance company can function as a patient advocate.

This is a revised more expanded version of her original book, Joining the Club. Released in January, 1997.

Shockney, L., Dierker, C., Coping with Loss: A guide for Emotional Recovery After Losing a Daughter to Breast Cancer.
This is a handbook written for the MSDBC organization and published in December 1996 in response to requests from mothers whose daughters have died from breast cancer. It provides various coping techniques and constructive ways to recover from such a devastating loss.

Shockney, L. "Breast Cancer: Making the Right Choices for You".
This is a detailed guide to help newly diagnosed women with breast cancer ensure that they are receiving care from qualified, competent physicians at a breast center that can provide the best care possible.It is being distributed to Johns Hopkins breast cancer patients beginning September 1997. In February 1998, this document was posted on the Hopkins Intelihealth web site for access by millions of women across the country.

Mrs. Shockney is co-editor of the medical breast cancer journal, Artemis, which can be found on the internet at the following address: www.med.jhu.edu/breastcenter/artemis/. This is a monthly journal and subscribing to it is free of charge.

Shockney, L. "Making the Right Choices for Breast Cancer Care".
This is a condensed version of the guide listed above. It was published by Johns Hopkins Medicine in June, 1998 and is made available to women who are seen in various women's health areas throughout the hospital as well as by mail and distributed at various health fairs and events like the Race for the Cure. She has written numerous articles for Intelihealth related to breast cancer which are posted on their website --- www.intelihealth.com.

Shockney, L. Comfort Book-- Nourishment for the Soul. Published locally.
The book, which is provided to each newly diagnosed breast cancer patient being treated at Hopkins, is a collection of favorite verses, prayers, humor, words of advise, and other information from the Johns Hopkins Breast Cancer Survivor Volunteers. Released in March 1999.

This is an article that describes the attitudinal program implemented at Hopkins by Mrs. Shockney with the goal for breast cancer patients to look upon their surgery as "transformation surgery" -- transformed from victim into survivor and the importance of the nurse's role in reinforcing this concept.
