March 25, 2000: Komen Symposium: Baltimore, Maryland. This is a one day seminar held annually. There are a variety of health care professionals speaking on topics of interest to breast cancer survivors and women at risk of developing breast cancer. Mrs. Shockney will be one of several speakers talking to this youths about the value of volunteering and the spirit and gratification in giving of your time. Mrs. Shockney was featured in this candid look at nursing at Johns Hopkins which began airing on January 28th. (It also aired on February 24th.) The total documentary is 5 hours of which 1 hour features Mrs. Shockney during the “oncology nursing” hour called “A Touch of Mercy.” Mrs. Shockney also was asked to do a 5 minute PSA to promote the program which airs throughout the months of January and February. This program will be rerun periodically on Discovery Health Cable channel throughout the coming months and into 2002. A letter of commendation was also sent by the producer of the documentary to Hopkins leadership about Mrs. Shockney’s extraordinary nursing commitment to her patients.

This annual conference offers a variety of topics including encourageing health care professionals in the field of pathology to relate closer to the patient. Mrs. Shockney gave a presentation on the surgical care improvements made at Johns Hopkins, for breast cancer patients, to make the experience of breast cancer surgery less physically and emotionally traumatic while emphasizing the important role that pathology staff play in helping a patient to feel transformed from a victim into a survivor. Mrs. Shockney was once again the keynote speaker for this large corporation based in Washington, DC. Due to the large number of employees at this business, and the majority being women, they offer special health programs for employees including mammography screening, clinical breast exams and other wellness programs. April 11, 2001: Breastival at JHU Homewood Campus
The alpha Kappa Delta Phi sorority at JHU partnered with the Johns Hopkins Breast Center to sponsor a Breastival to promote breast health among young women. Mrs. Shockney coordinated the event with the sorority leader, Brettina Ang. The event took place from 11AM to 4PM on campus, in the Glass Pavillion. It was a huge success with nearly 700 students attending. Education booths were provided by: ACS, Komen Foundation, MDBC, Men Against Breast Cancer, YSC, LBBC, and Sprint. Jazzercise was offered and there were several speaker from the Johns Hopkins Breast Center including Dr. Nahabedian. The program went so well that the breast cancer organizations attending are interested in helping to replicate this event across the country at other college campuses! Mrs. Shockney will create a guidelines manual for this purpose.

June 8, 2001: Digital Telemammography video
Mrs. Shockney was interviewed and video taped for a special ceremony that will be held on this day, announcing the development of digital telemammography. Johns Hopkins has created a mammmography mobil that has digital mammography in it along with full service breast care. This mobile will be traveling to Arizona for its first stop, on an Indian reservation, to provide mammography and reading the results in real time, since the images will be electronically beamed back to Hopkins while the patient is there in the van! The ceremony will be held in Scaggsville, MD where Hopkins Biophysics lab is located.

June 16 & 17, 2001: Johns Hopkins Breast Cancer Survivor Retreat: Bon Secours Spritual Center, Marriottsville, MD.
Mrs. Shockney coordinated and conducted the first survivor retreat ever held in Maryland for breast cancer survivors who have received part of all of their treatment at Johns Hopkins and have now completed treatment in the last 2-9 months. The program was sponsored by the Maryland Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The selection of the content and speaker line up was based on surveys conducted with patients over a one year period. The program is designed to help women “find their new normal” and reengage in life stronger and healthier than ever before. The program was huge success with the finale being a butterfly release.

Mrs. Shockney coordinated and oversaw the development of a formal Hopkins walkers team as well as a cheering squad to cheer on the Breast Center volunteers comprised of faculty, survivors and staff, who are participating in this 60 mile walk over a 3 day period. The survivors walking will be called "Lillie's Ladies"!! The Hopkins team was the largest Avon had ever had (48 total) and there were also 31 cheer leaders!

Mrs. Shockney was interviewed and photographed for an article that appeared today regarding the importance contnuing with annual mammography despite recent studies showing that it may not increase survival rates.

Mrs. Shockney was interviewed regarding her personal experience with breast cancer, the value of mammography and the controversy in the media presently about annual mammography and monthly breast self exam. Mrs. Shockney and Dr. Tsangaris were individually interviewed for a program focusing on breast imaging and new technology related to digital mammography. It will air later in the month.

Mrs. Shockney was interviewed for a story that was airing on this evening regarding whether surgeons are giving patients all their options related to breast cancer surgery, especially the option of lumpectomy. This program aired as part of the national news.

Mrs. Shockney was interviewed for 15 minutes live regarding breast cancer and breast health , focusing on the controversy regarding annual mammograms and breast self examinations. It aired at 6:30AM CST.

October 18, 2002: Breast Health and Breast Cancer Seminar for Nurses: Wheeling West Virginia.
Mrs. Shockney spoke again this year for the Liberty College's educational programs for health care professionals. The focus for this October program was a half day seminar on breast cancer-- latest in research and treatment; diagnostic techniques, and methods to improve care. Mrs. Shockney also presented on Breastivals, Survivor Retreats and how to improve the surgical experience for women undergoing breast cancer surgery. Her contact is Janette Henthorn.

October 19, 2002: Hecht's Dept. Store in Towson Town Center and the Johns Hopkins Breast Center partner for a mini Breastival event!
Mrs. Shockney coordinated this event held in partnership with Hechts! Johns Hopkins trademarked program, Breastival, will be held in each of Hechts major market locations on this day! Annapolis, Towson, 3 in North Carolina, Philly, and DC! The total number of Breastivals nationally will be 15. The programs, designed to raise awareness among young college students about the importance of practicing good breast health habits and undoing myths about breast cancer, will all take place between 2pm and 4pm on this day! October 20, 2002: American Cancer Society's Making Strides for Breast Cancer. Baltimore, Maryland.
Lillie Shockney served as the Survivor Champion for this event. This is the first time a Making Strides event has been held in the mid-Atlantic division. It will consist of a 5 mile walk that will tour parts of the inner harbor and downtown Baltimore. This is a fund raiser for the ACS, dedicated to raising funds tha support breast cancer education, research, early detection, and survivorship programs. November 2, 2002: Think Pink Gala Ball, Radisson Lord Baltimore Hotel, Baltimore, MD.
This was a black tie (optional) affair sponsored by the Radisson to raise money for three breast cancer organizations: Johns Hopkins Breast Center; Mothers Supporting Daughters with Breast Cancer and Men Against Breast Cancer. Cocktail hour begins at 7 PM. Dinner and dancing to follow. Come join us this evening to support these non-profit organizations. Mrs. Shockney spoke on behalf of MSDBC and talked about her mom and the extraordinary work she has done supporting families facing breast cancer. Tickets are $125 a piece. Parking is free, courtesy of the Radisson and valet parking is also provided for free. For those traveling from out of town, special discounts on rooms are being offered. November 3 & 4, 2002: Johns Hopkins Breast Cancer Survivor Retreat. Bon Secours Spiritual Center, Marriottsville, Maryland.
This was the third retreat held for women who have recently completed their breast cancer treatment and want to focus on getting back on track with their lives in a healthier way, physically and emotionally. The program is coordinated and conducted by Lillie Shockney, Director of Education and Outreach for the Johns Hopkins Breast Center. Johns Hopkins faculty will present over this two day overnight event on subjects pertinent to women who have completed breast cancer treatment in the last year. Mrs. Shockney and Dr. Tsangaris also from Johns Hopkins gave several presentations to health care professionals as well as a survivor audience. Information included treatment options for early stage breast cancer; sentinel node biopsy; Survivor Retreats; and promoting breast health among young women, and using humor as a weapon against breast cancer.
