Lillie averages about thirty speaking engagements out of state a year.
The
majority are on the weekends, though some are held during the week. Her
audiences vary from breast cancer survivors, health care professionals
involved with the care and treatment of women with breast cancer,
volunteer
groups, women's clubs and groups, church groups, and people seeking an
inspirational as well as humorous speaker.She has appeared on television dozens of times as well as on radio, appeared in more than five hundred articles in newspapers and magazines since 1994 regarding her experiences with breast cancer which include being a survivor, herself, caring for women who also have breast cancer, educating women about the warning signs of a breast health problem, being interviewed about her books or articles written and published about breast cancer, and she is frequently interviewed for the work she does to facilitate improvements locally, regionally and nationally to make the treatment process of breast cancer less traumatic for women diagnosed in the future. Her favorite speech that she "takes on the road" focuses on how to use humor to overcome difficult times.... in her case, her experiences she shares are about her personal experiences with breast cancer. October 30, 1998: YWCA Annual Event: Mrs. Shockney was selected to be the motivational speaker for this year's event to be held in Salisbury , Maryland. Her presentation was two hours in length fro 10 AM to 12 noon. Her talk focused on how to turn a negative experience into a positive outcome. November 7, 1998: World Bank 2nd Annual Women's Health Symposium: Mrs. Shockney was requested to present her talk on breast cancer again this year as a result of survey feedback provided by participants last year. She was the keynote speaker this year. Her book will be sold as a fund raiser for the Johns Hopkins Breast Center. She received a standing ovation for her presentation. November 20, 1998: WMAR TV: Morning Show with Janet Roach: Mrs. Shockney appeared on the 6 AM show to talk about "A Woman's Journey" which was held the following day at a hotel at the Inner Harbor of Baltimore, Maryland. The program was a sell out before the morning show aired live that morning. Women interested in hearing the programs offered, which included presentations from 59 Hopkins faculty could obtain an order form and get copies of the presentations which were audio taped. November 21, 1998: Johns Hopkins "A Woman's Journey": This is an annual event sponsored by the Women's Board of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Mrs. Shockney was the plenary speaker this year and talk about her experiences with breast cancer. The event will be held at a hotel in downtown Baltimore. There were approximately 1200 women who attended the event. Mrs. Shockney received a standing ovation for her presentation. November 21, 1998: Intelihealth/ Talkspot: A Woman's Journey: Mrs. Shockney's presentation for this event was broadcast live over the internet on www.talkspot.com. She was also interviewed live for a 45 minute talk immediately after the speech and responded to questions about breast cancer from an internet audience. November 23, 1998: Upper Chesapeake Health System: Mrs. Shockney gave a 3 hour presentation to executives from this organization who are considering partnering with Hopkins for breast cancer care. Her presentation covered the various programs offered by Hopkins for breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, monitoring for high risk women, and support services available for treatment and management short and long term. December 9, 1998: WJZ TV Channel 13 News: Dr. Dooley and Mrs. Shockney were intereviewed by channel 13 news regarding soy protein nutritional supplement being used with breast cancer patients. The interviewer decided to spend additional time interviewing Mrs. Shockney about her personal experiences with breast cancer and how it has changed her life. December 15, 1998: Mildred Mindel Breast Cancer Organization: Mrs. Shockney was the keynote speaker for their meeting held in Pikesville, Maryland. Her presentation focused on using humor to overcome depression caused by a diagnosis of breast cancer. December 16, 1998: Howard County Medical Center: Has requested that Mrs. Shockney come and give a presentation on the breast cancer support programs that she has implemented at Johns Hopkins. She was also be speaking about her personal experiences with breast cancer as a nurse and patient. Howard County Medical Center recently became part of the Johns Hopkins Health System. January 13, 1999: American Cancer Society Fund Raiser: Polo Grill in Baltimore Maryland. Mrs. Shockney was the keynote speaker for a fund raising event held in Baltimore to raise money for projects related to cancer control in the Baltimore metro area. This specific event was the kick off program for their Daffodils Campaign. January 21 & 27, 1999: Johns Hopkins Outpatient Surgery Professional Staff Inservice: Mrs. Shockney gave a presentation on Ambulatory Surgery Mastectomy Performance Improvement Initiatives as well as on the new concept implemented called "Waking up Well." The audience was doctors and nurses who work in the Ambulatory Surgery area (OR and Pre op and RR) at Johns Hopkins. February 1999: Physicians Marketing Group who manufacture Revival, a soy protein nutritional supplement, are going to advertise Mrs. Shockney's book in their newsletter. February 23, 1999: American Cancer Society: Mrs. Shockney will be conducting a training course for the ACS to certify women as "Early Breast Cancer Detection Health Educators." The program will be held in White Marsh Maryland. March 11, 1999: Western Maryland College: Breast Cancer Awareness Program: Mrs Shockney will be conducting a lecture on early detection of breast cancer to raise awareness about this disease among young women who attend college at this campus located in Westminster Maryland. March 17 & 18, 1999: Dupont Pharmaceuticals Annual Conference: San Diego, CA. Mrs. Shockney will giving two presentations during this conference. The first is on Clinical Quality Outcomes of Care for Breast Cancer Patients and the second will be on Using Humor when Confronted with Breast Cancer. May 14, 1999: Relay for Life: Anne Arundel Community College (6:00 p.m.) This ACS event will have Mrs. Shockney give the keynote address at the beginning of the program. This is a major fund raiser event for the ACS and a 24 hour celebrating of survivors events. May 17 & 18, 1999: Working Woman's Magazine's Annual Marketing Conference on Women's Health. New York City. Mrs. Shockney will be a guest speaker for this event. Her topic will focus on how to empower women with medical knowledge that enables them to directly participate in the decision making about their care. The examples she will provide relate to breast cancer care. She also will be talking about how to use patient satisfaction survey results to improve care and promote relationships between health care professionals and their patients. May 21, 1999: Relay for Life: Westminster High School, Westminster, Maryland (6:00 p.m.) Mrs. Shockney will also do a keynote address for this ACS event as well. June 23, 1999 -- Radio One in Baltimore, Maryland will interview Mrs. Shockney from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. about breast cancer -- how to diagnose it early, what the latest treatment options are and what is on the horizon for research discoveries. June 24th, 1999: Heart, Body and Soul: Mrs. Shockney will be conducting an ACS Breast Health Education Training Seminar to volunteers from this organization who in turn will go out into their communities and churches and educated African-American women about the early warning signs of a breast health problem, the benefits of early detection with breast self exams and mammograms. July 14, 1999 at 9 p.m. Eastern time. Mrs. Shockney will be the guest for a chat session on the Dicovery internet site. August 22, 1999: Langaberger Basket's Horizon of Hope Kickoff. Catonsville Maryland. Dr. Maurice Nahabedian, plastic surgeon in the Breast Center and Lillie Shockney, education and outreach director and 7 year breast cancer survivor will both be speaking at this event. Dr. Nahabedian will be speaking about new techniques in performing breast reconstruction. Mrs. Shockney will be talking about the value of humor when confronted with breast cancer. This event is a kick off for a fund raiser done annually by the Langaberger basket company. They sell a special basket called "horizon of hope" with a portion of the proceeds doing to the American Cancer Society for breast cancer research. September 18, 1999: About Faces Day Spa -- Inner Health and Fitness Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Kennilworth Shopping Center, About Faces Day Spa will be sponsoring an event to promote health and fitness, with a focus on educating women about breast cancer and promoting methods to reduce stress in women's lives. "Creating the Ideal Experience for Women with Breast Cancer -- Defining and Promoting Best Practices for Diagnosis and Treatment." Mrs. Shockney and Dr. Dooley are the coordinators and hosts for this international health care professionals event. Internationally reowned speakers will be present during this three day program. Mrs. Shockney will be speaking during this conference about how to meet JCAHO standards using breast cancer performance improvement intiatives demonstrated at Hopkins. December 9 & 10, 1999: Working Woman Magazine's Conference on Marketing Women's Health: Mrs. Shockney has been asked to be a speaker again by this organization based on the high ratings she received at the May event held in NYC. This conference will be held in San Francisco.
